The easyJet guide to its great European city destinations

PLANET Confidential readers just love city breaks – and this summer easyJet opens up the options for some of Europe’s most vibrant urban hot-spots.

With routes to fantastic European cities including Gothenburg, Zurich, Amsterdam and Munich, the UK’s largest airline has something for everyone.

GOTHENBURG

Gothenburg OysterGothenburg OysterGASTRONOMES rejoice! Sweden’s second largest city is being hailed as one of Northern Europe’s leading culinary destinations. Seafood is what Gothenburg does best. Flavoursome fish and shell fish, matured slowly in cold waters and plucked from the north Atlantic feature in tantalising dishes at the city’s prime eating spots, some of which are Michelin-starred, such as the Kock & Vin restaurant. Get even closer to fresh ingredients at one of the numerous food markets before taking in some of the city’s other delights. Sweden’s most famous street, The Avenue, is a real treat. Amongst the cafes are the city theatre, concert hall and art museum. Thrill-seekers should head to the tree-lined Lisebeg, one of Europe’s largest and most beautiful amusement parks, while the 40-acre botanical gardens provide a more sedate source of pleasure.

ZURICH

ZurichZurichTHE ‘lifestyle capital on the water’ is a must for culture lovers as the city boasts a staggering 100 plus galleries and over 50 museums. For those who prefer to sample Switzerland’s liveliest nightlife when the sun goes down, it is said that there is no such thing as after-hours in the city on the River Limmat, while party nights in Zürich-West, the former industrial district turned trendy, are billed as truly unique. For the morning after the night before, and for a relaxing experience in the sunshine, there are countless green oases dotted about the centre.

AMSTERDAM

THE Netherlands’ city of canals offers a day of sightseeing packed with culture. Pretend you’re a bottle on a conveyor belt at the Heineken museum or wander deeper among the labyrinth of canal-lined streets and visit the Anne Frank Museum to see the house where she hid from the Nazi invaders during the Second World War and penned her famous diary. Other stops well worth a visit include the Van Gogh Museum and the Rijksmuseum, full of arts, crafts and historic artefacts.

MUNICH

THE sprawling capital of Bavaria is overlooked by the Alps and is a refreshing stop-off thanks to its lively beer halls, which curiously contain no bars and are filled with live, traditional Oomaph music. Beer waiters are on hand to take your orders, just don’t expect anything less than a pint when asking for a small drink. Beyond the beer halls, shops and markets is the huge Englischer Garten, a pretty open space containing a beer garden and thrifty-priced grub. This German city’s motto is ‘Munchen mag Dich’ meaning Munich likes you, and visitors should notice the laid back spirit of the place. An intricate, moving glockenspiel on the front façade of the city’s New Town Hall which performs at 11am, 12pm and 5pm daily, is a sight to behold as is art old and modern in the city’s three main museums: Pinakothek der Moderne, Alte Pinakothek and Neue Pinakothek.

One-way flights on all four routes from Manchester start from £21.99 (including taxes).
