Footballer, Falcons and Marmite Fuel Jumbo Success Story

ON the anniversary of launching its A380 jumbo jet service to Manchester, Emirates is reporting a huge surge in passenger and freight figures. The third daily flight added last winter has contributed to the success story.

Passenger numbers are currently up 50 per cent – 33,000 this July compared with 22,000 in 2010. Between last September and the end of August, it increased the number of people using its Manchester services to nearly 350,000.

Now UK vice-president Laurie Berryman has hinted he hopes to possibly introduce a second jumbo to the airport as well as upgrading the A330 aircraft on the daily 10am flight to a larger A777.

Mr Berryman said: “This year has exceeded all our expectations. Going back to 12 months ago, we were concerned about adding the extra capacity and it was a bit of a step into the unknown.

“However, as has been the case with Manchester time and again, we have filled the extra capacity we put into the market.”

Since introducing the A380, Emirates has sold 2,000 first-class seats, which Mr Berryman said were particularly popular with rich businessmen and Premier League footballers. Most popular onward destinations from Dubai are Hongkong, China, India and Thailand.

Imports are still quiet but cargo flown out of the north west has grown by 40 per cent, says Mr Berryman. A substantial export is of foodstuffs – baked beans Marmite and the like – to expats living in the Middle East.

Oh, and FALCONS. Emirates have flown 528 of the sporting birds of prey Dubai over the past three months.
